GSA Richland Federal Building

November 21, 2014
Pfau Long Architecture was one of four architects selected by the United States General Services Administration (GSA) under the First Impressions Program.  The First Impressions Program was established as part of the GSA’s Design Excellence Program as a means to renovate lobbies and public plazas in GSA owned and leased buildings in order to make them more user friendly and attractive, while fostering a better image and relationship with the general public.  The Richland Master Plan was developed to satisfy these needs of the facility’s primary tenant, the U.S. Department of Energy, as well attract various other federal agency tenants.  The master plan proposes simple modifications, which will enhance and blend with the mid-20th century Modernist design of the existing building:

A new lobby waiting and seating area that is more visibly open

Redesigned permanent security screening stations at both building entrances

New lobby interior finishes and furnishings to harmonize with the existing aesthetics

Office improvement design schemes, which will allow DOE to downsize and consolidate their organization’s functions

Renovations to the dining room and outdoor dining terrace, including a new  enclosed and secure landscape design

An overall new landscape plan which will reorganize the parking lots and improve plantings

A key goal of these design initiatives is to enliven the appearance of the building – defining a more stately and dignified presence for the federal government in downtown Richland.
