The Sugar Bowl AcademyNovember 20, 2014
Future project phases for the Sugar Bowl Academy will include: 1) a Commons Building with a dining hall, kitchen, student lounge, meeting rooms and offices, 2) a second dormitory to accommodate an additional 27 students and faculty apartments and 3) a dedicated training facility.
Located in the environmentally sensitive Lake Tahoe region, part of the team’s challenge was resolving complex planning, environmental and programming issues. Pfau Long Architecture was the design architect for the project working closely in collaboration with Ward Young Architects who served as the Executive Architects. State-of- the-art sustainable strategies for high mountain environments were part of the design, including “passive haus” strategies for super insulation, high performance window systems and energy recovery ventilation; all of which served to significantly reduce the energy required to provide year round thermal comfort in the buildings.
