Lick Wilmerding High School

November 20, 2014
Lick-Wilmerding High School is a non-profit, independent, coeducational, college preparatory day school, serving 380 students grades 9-12.  With a rich history of integrating academic courses with technical and fine arts, the 30,000 gsf project, is a “once in a lifetime” opportunity to guide future campus development for a growing institution.  As the union of three industrial arts schools founded circa 1900, the school combines over a century of philosophies and traditions into an integrated and demanding academic curriculum with a distinctive academic program.  Hence, the school motto: “Education for the Head, Hands and Heart”.

The project addresses the long-term facilities needs of the entire school, with emphasis on the character of the campus and its precious open space.  Work encompassed campus master planning and the design of three projects – a new 19,000 gsf Technology and Design Center, a new 6,000 gsf Dining Hall and Music Building; and the renovation and expansion of the Performing Arts Building.

The campus’s design extends the lower level of the campus, placing the Technology and Design Center at the heart, encouraging interdisciplinary work and collaboration. The remainder of the campus wraps around this centralized core, forming an understated design solution. The new Dining Hall and Music Building is an important social gathering space at the heart of the campus with large quantities of natural light as well as sweeping views.  The existing theater was expanded from 300 seats to 428, utilizing the existing footprint and shell without structural modification.
