CCSF Multi-Use Building

November 20, 2014
The result of a unique partnership with two local academic institutions, the Multi-Use Building provides opportunities for the City College of San Francisco to offer joint resources and academic courses with San Francisco State University, allowing students to complete degrees in Teacher Education, Child Development, and Nursing and Community Health programs. Housed in the 102,000 gsf, three-story building are classrooms, administrative offices, specialized laboratories, computer lab, study spaces, childcare/family center, meeting rooms, café, and other spaces for student development.

The project was designed and built as a successful collaboration between the college, the design team, and the contractor, and has achieved LEED® Gold certification.  The project employs a multitude of sustainable design elements including a state-of-the-art, wind-driven natural ventilation system through the full building that takes advantage of the local prevailing winds by allowing natural ventilation from the perimeter rooms to be exhausted out through the glazed skylights at the roof level.  The central atrium that serves as the “lungs” of the building, organizing circulation and facilitating natural ventilation strategies.

The building’s overall design concept centers around a full height atrium acting as the building’s north-south circulation spine. The design pulls apart a traditional double loaded corridor, introducing daylight and sectional views throughout the building.  Each floor has a unique circulation pattern with pedestrian bridges that cross the atrium, providing social spaces for student and faculty interaction.
